Conclusions of the seminar “For peace, justice, dignity and rights of peoples in the Mediterranean area” (14-16 November 2007, Barcelona)

The participants of the seminar “For peace, justice, dignity and rights of peoples in the Mediterranean area”, members of civil society organizations belonging to communities and stateless nations which share the Mediterranean territories, put forward the following conclusions:

We confirm that for each of us the Mediterranean Sea constitutes –as it has always been for thousands of years– a common point of reference consisting of a large plurality of histories, languages, cultures and political, social and economical circumstances. This role as a point of reference has recently been boosting due to the process we have come to know as globalization, a process which enables us to perceive that we are all part of what is happening everywhere in our planet and we share liabilities for it. The actual on-going processes currently taking place in the Mediterranean allow us to confirm the imaginary line that deeply segregates the so-called North, wealthy and highly developed, and the impoverished South. We observe a growing fracture that is paradoxically deepening the division between the two sides of the Mediterranean rim and hinders the bridgening of gaps for co-operation and mutual understanding.

In front of this new reality, the participants have decided to search for ways to bridge these gaps, taking into consideration the fact that they all belong to peoples or communities which are marginalised or not fully recognised in both the North and the South sides, and also work in favour of individual and collective human rights and the promotion of emancipatory struggles for linguistic, cultural, social, and economical rights. In spite of the lack of mutual knowledge and recognition, there is indeed a common framework that bring us near to each other.

We are aware that if co-operation among us and mutual understanding, in accordance with current human aspirations of freedom and liberation, could be achieved in the Mediterranean context, we would become pioneers in making another world possible. Bearing this in mind, and thanks to the dialogue and exchange we have established in these workshops, we constitute ourselves as a network, making the most of the advantages provided by the new information and communication technologies. This is our bridge. Certainly, such a bridge is a challenge running at the opposite direction of so many other obstructing bridges upon which people are forced to emigrate, unequal wealth and power-relations circulate. Thus, we set up a network that should enable us to establish innovative forms of co-operation, democratic co-existence and peace and which hopefully becomes a model in the near future.

Neix la Xarxa de Pobles i Comunitats No Plenament Reconeguts del Mediterrani

Els participants als tallers de la Xarxa de Pobles i Comunitats No Plenament Reconeguts del Mediterrani, membres d’entitats de la societat civil de diferents nacions sense estat i comunitats que configuren l’entorn humà de la Mediterrània, presenten a l’opinió pública les següents conclusions:

Constatem que també avui, per tots nosaltres, la mar Mediterrània és, com ho ha estat durant milers d’anys, un referent comú constituït d’una gran pluralitat d’històries, llengües i cultures, i de diferents situacions polítiques, econòmiques i socials. Aquest referent comú s’està reforçant amb el procés que porta el nom de globalització, procés que ens permet percebre com mai fins a quin punt els éssers humans som interdependents, com els esdeveniments que afecten la humanitat en qualsevol indret del món ens pertanyen i ens porten a ser-ne corresponsables. En aquest context podem veure millor que per la Mediterrània passa la línia simbòlica que divideix el nostre planeta en un Nord de benestar i un Sud d’empobriment. Una línia de ruptura profunda que, paradoxalment, va allunyant les ribes humanes de la Mediterrània i dificulta la construcció, altrament necessària, de ponts de cooperació i d’entesa.

Davant d’aquest panorama, els participants en els esmentats tallers prenem la decisió de cercar vies per a establir un d’aquests ponts, valent-se del fet que tots ells pertanyem a pobles i comunitats que, tant al Nord com al Sud de la Mediterrània, som marginats o no suficientment reconeguts, ni que sigui en diversos graus, i treballem per a compartir lluites a favor dels drets humans individuals i col·lectius, dels drets lingüístics, culturals, socials, econòmics i, en definitiva, lluites a favor de l’emancipació a tots nivells. Existeix una situació comuna que ens apropa de manera objectiva, encara que siguin també evidents moltes llacunes en el coneixement mutu i en el reconeixement recíproc.

Som conscients que si aconseguíssim crear un nou pont de cooperació i entesa que s’adigui a les aspiracions de llibertat i alliberament actuals de la humanitat, en el marc concret de la Mediterrània, ens apuntaríem entre els pioners que creuen que un altre món és possible.

És en aquesta perspectiva que, gràcies als intercanvis que hem establert en aquesta trobada, ens sentim amb ànims de prendre en les nostres mans, tot esperant de trobar complicitats arreu, les possibilitats incalculables que ens donen les noves tecnologies de la comunicació i la informació: ens constituïm en xarxa. Aquest és el nostre pont. Certament, un pont que és un repte, a les antípodes de tants altres ponts que s’alcen damunt la Mediterrània, pels quals circulen persones forçades a emigrar, riqueses que beneficien els uns contra els altres, poders dominants que s’ajuden a mantenir-se els uns als altres.

Així, doncs, creem una xarxa que, tot utilitzant una tecnologia que ens posa al mateix pla de possibilitats, ens permeti trobar noves i innovadores formes de cooperació i de convivència democràtica, de pau compartida en últim terme, que sigui un dia –tant de bo!- exemplar en el nostre món globalitzat.
